- I seek seemingly out there, creative and fun activities that most others would not
The photo above is of my photoshoot in Brazil while on a samba tour to perform in the actual Carnival parade. I also attend events like 5 Rhythms dance, spiritual healings and event experiences that most people have never heard about. It opens me up to those juicy little pockets of life that often turn out to be extremely memorable, inspiring and uplifting.
- I pay attention to how my body feels
I’m a big believer that looking and feeling great influences all of the areas of my life. Moving my body through strength training and dance, as well as paying attention to what I eat, helps connect me to my body. These days, I can even estimate my heart rate (beats per minute) with relative accuracy.
- I always have a ‘Weekly Update’
My litmus test to see if I’ve had a switched on and productive week is whether I have a fun and interesting story to tell my Personal Trainer every Friday or my fellow Zumba ladies on a Tuesday night. If I’ve got “nothing to report”, it’s a sign that I’ve not really embraced nor been engaged in my week.
- I stay organised
I strongly advocate being organised. It definitely reduces the stress across all areas of my life. Being planned and prepared allows me to set an intention about how I want to be spending my time and how I want these future experiences to pan out. It also helps me be more adaptive as challenges arise.
- I have goals
Specific goals keep me on track, in particular my health and fitness, and my business growth. Without goals, I noticed I get complaincent and start to allow bad habits to creep back in that don’t serve me. I schedule time to ensure these healthier, progressive habits have a home in my day/week too and physically block those times in my calendar so nothing else (less important) can creep in.
- I ask myself if I’m happy… and often
While it’s not reasonable to feel “happy” 100% of the time, I do consider feeling satisfied, accomplished, peaceful, calm and connected as a measure of happiness. I use this to steer myself back towards those activities that move me towards where I want to go as well as adjust my thoughts to also support this journey. Otherwise, I tend to get bogged down in “doing” a bunch of items on a checklist that make me appear productive, but not necessarily feeling rewarded or happy as a whole.
- I’m always learning
There is no limit to what you an learn these days. Between webinars, YouTube content, local events, classes, conferences, group coaching programs, online courses, trainers and (of course) coaches, you can learn ANYTHING. Several times a year, I partake in some form of paid group or 1:1 coaching that helps me expand my business acumen. At the end of 2021, I did Amy Bajada’s 30 Day Business Cashflow Challenge and earlier this year, I completed her The Small Business Cashflow Course.
- I spend quality time with the little people in my life
I consider myself an intentional “Kick Arse” Auntie 😉 I always make sure I see both my nieces (4 years and 20 months) every 3-4 weeks. We engage our imaginations, our communication skills and our physicality. That’s how we make a lot long lasting memories – movement combined with emotion. I make sure I pay them as much attention as their little souls desire and deserve. I focus on saying “Yes” to as many of their requests as possible… I’ve lost count how many times I’ve played hide and seek.
So in case you haven’t worked it out yet, what I consider an Engaged with Life attitude looks is INTEGRATION. Striking that ideal blend between Fun + Adventure > Discipline + Goals > Creativity + Connection and at the right amounts as the seasons of your life requires it.
Did you notice that I’ve not called this “Work Life Balance?” I’ve already made the mistake (several times over) either being ALL about my business OR diving head first into my health and fitness OR being all about a specific relationship only to have whatever I wasn’t focusing on, suffer. For example… when I would exercise a lot, my waist line would shrunk, but so did my bank balance and when my bank balance looked nice and full, my body would take on a more “abundantly curvaceous” appearance. I’d also witness the same in my relationships… by being “all consumed” by business, I could go weeks without talking to anyone other than clients and wonder why I was feeling so disconnected and isolated.
And I’m not the only one. I have seen these similar scenarios play out 100s of times with other fellow business owners and colleagues, and desire different now! I’ve worked extra diligently to ensure I integrate all elements into my life with intention so that nothing is neglected.
Now I’d love to hear from you.
