Are You Catfishing Your Customers?
According to Wikipedia “Catfishing is a deceptive activity where a person creates a fictional persona or fake identity… usually targeting a specific victim…”
This is my biggest pet peeve, with online dating, but more importantly, when it comes to traditional advertising techniques and marketing advice.
“The Experts” basically encourage you, as a business owner, to LIE and mislead your prospective customers… essentially “Catfishing” them into entering into a business relationship with you.
The problem with this is that you’re likely going to attract customers that are not a match to you or your business and you’re doing yourself (and your customer) a massive disservice.
Unmatched customers are often:
1) immediately disappointed (which is hard to come back from),
2) difficult to please,
3) require more follow-up, and
3) may even stretch out their payments until well after their due dates. OR even a refusal to pay because you have not met their expectations
This is usually due to a lack of trust, respect and value.
The solution, invest your time and energy in advertising and marketing strategies that match your personality type, what you do and the level you do it.
This not only will have you attracting more of the customers you actually WANT to do business with, it’ll also make your marketing so much easier because you no longer need the feel to embellish or lie!
I talk a bit about the importance of target audience in my recent guest spot on The Boring Sh!t in Business Podcast with Amy Bajada that you can listen to right here.
